Beware of Task-Based Schemes on Telegram and WhatsApp Promising High Earnings in India
In recent years, more Indian seniors have been using smartphones to connect with family, enjoy entertainment, and access information. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), as of March 2023, there were over 790 million internet subscribers in India. WhatsApp is used by over 535 million Indians as of 2023, making India its largest market. Telegram is also growing in popularity, especially for sharing group messages.
While these technologies have many benefits, scams targeting Indian seniors have also increased, especially on WhatsApp and Telegram. Criminals are taking advantage of elders’ trust by running “task-based earning schemes” that promise easy and quick money.
You might have received messages such as “Earn ₹5,000 per day from home!” or “Simple tasks, big rewards—join our WhatsApp group!” According to a 2023 report from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), such task-based online job frauds led to losses of over ₹1,000 crore in India just in the first six months of 2023. It is important to be aware of how these scams work and how you can protect yourself.
What Are Task-Based Schemes?
Task-based schemes are scams that reach people through WhatsApp or Telegram, offering payment for completing simple activities like liking social media posts, subscribing to YouTube channels, writing reviews, or joining groups. In August 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued an advisory about these schemes after thousands of complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in).
The scammers often address you as “Aunty/Uncle” or “Respected Madam/Sir,” and promise high rewards for little work. Many pretend to be Human Resource (HR) executives from companies like Amazon or Flipkart, and use fake appointment letters or company logos.
Some tasks may first pay small rewards through UPI or Paytm to gain your trust. Later, they may ask for your Aadhaar number, PAN card, or UPI details “for verification” or to “transfer payment.” These requests are meant to steal your personal information or money.
Why Are These Schemes Dangerous?
According to Delhi Police’s Cyber Crime Unit, there has been a sharp rise in these scams since 2022, especially targeting older adults who may not be aware of digital dangers. The main risks include:
– Financial Loss: Victims may get a small payment at first, but later are asked to pay money as a “processing fee,” “GST charge,” or for “bigger earnings.” According to Karnataka Police, victims in Bengaluru lost over ₹50 crore in 2023 to such scams.
– Data Theft: Scammers collect Aadhaar, PAN, and UPI details, which may be used for identity theft. In some cases, loans and credit cards have been fraudulently opened using the victim’s information.
– Malware and Hacking: Links in messages may install apps that steal personal information, access contacts, files, and bank details. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has warned that clicking on unknown links can spread malware.
Tips to Stay Safe from Task-Based Schemes
1. Be Careful About Big Offers
Real work-from-home jobs do not promise high payments for simple tasks, especially if they are offered through random WhatsApp or Telegram messages.
2. Do Not Share Personal Information
Never share your Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, UPI IDs, or OTPs with strangers on WhatsApp, Telegram, or unfamiliar websites. Real companies do not ask for sensitive information through these platforms.
3. Avoid Clicking Unknown Links
Do not click on links sent by unknown contacts or groups that promise rewards or earnings. CERT-In has reported that such links are a common way for fraudsters to steal information from Indian users.
4. Confirm With Family
If you receive job offers on WhatsApp or Telegram, talk to your children, grandchildren, or trusted friends before responding. Family members can help check if the offer is genuine.
5. Report and Block
If you get scam messages or calls, block and report the sender on WhatsApp or Telegram. If you have shared information or money, inform your bank immediately and file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or call the helpline number 1930.
Conclusion
Digital tools have made life easier, but they also bring new risks for Indian seniors who may not be familiar with online tricks. Real job offers require proper checks and do not ask for payments or sensitive details through messaging apps. Protect your information, be alert, and always ask for advice if you are unsure.
